I'm staying logged in all dayFollow

#102 Aug 28 2013 at 8:04 AM Rating: Good
So last night (8/27) i was finally able to get into the game at 11 pm and several others in my FC were actually able to get in as well. It turns out we were able to get into the game finally because people were actually logging out because of a maintenance window that was announced and there was not point in staying on AFK as they would get booted anyway.

This just goes to show that yes staying in the game AFK does prevent other people from playing.

As far as spamming the logon on button it is a bit different for PS3 users (or at least me). After hitting start it takes approximately 5-7 seconds for my character to load. So in total it takes about 10 seconds from the point of getting Server Full message to actually try and logon again.

Would be nice to see them add a little bit of play time for everyone following their additions to the data center. I've only tried on 5 or 6 different occasions, but I have yet to be able to log in and I've been trying since Monday. I haven't spent any longer than about 5 minutes each time I've tried. It's either 1017 or unable to update world list.

Really trying to give SE a chance here with this, but if I can't get in to try it then I can't really see myself subscribing. I guess on the bright side it's one less person taking up space who's actually trying to play the game.

This is the last thing I will say on this topic. Doing the right thing does not make you a martyr because your life is not forfeit for your actions. It makes you a decent person, nothing more, nothing less. It means doing what is right simply because it is right, and for no other reason. Not because people will praise you for it. Not because you stand to gain from it. What makes a person good or bad is the decision to do what is right when you KNOW no one is watching and the only thing you stand to gain is integrity. You ARE bad people plain, pure and simple. That you would behave so base over something as trivial as a video game reveals the total depth of your character... and it is a shallow pool you wade in.

I do a lot of good in real life, and FFXIV is my only vice. I'm sure you have much worse vices you don't tell anyone about. I paid and continue to pay my dues. Karma bit me yesterday and I wanted to punch the guy at my ISP who toggled the on/off switch on my cable internet. Took me 2 hours to log back in. Then I logged out last night for server maintenance, and tried to log back in a few times before work to find out that I can't update the NA/EU server list. I would have significantly less fervor if an afk boot was implemented. I am hoping for that. If not, people will take advantage of the situation. Do you consider that Obama was bad becuase he was forced to use superpacs to win the election? He did not want to, vehemantly opposed the Supreme Court's ruling that they be implemented. But in the end he was forced to use them. If he didn't he would not have won the election, because Mitt Romney was using Superpacs religiously.

I only have a limited time to play because I have a family... If I spend that time trying to log in, its like a little of me dies inside. But my statement was that we are not martyrs, as in we are not trying to die for this cause.

So there.

And how is this different for anyone else? If you want to exploit the lack of auto-logout, fine, but don't pretend like you aren't hurting other gamers who are just like you. SE is to blame for this, not your fellow gamers.

Right on man...

I only attempted to stay logged in because SE messed up and are basically forcing us to do this if we want any chance at all of playing.. and I am in Eastern time and only have the prime time hours available to play... so either I stay logged in, or I wait another week or two for SE to fix this... I'm already behind the rest of the LS due to RL limits to playtime and issues we had during P4 and EA... I'll be damned if I am not going to at least try to stay logged in... PSN cuts you off apparently so I did not get to stay on yesterday... but luckily got back on that time....

I am curious how fractured FCs are going to become because of this. Not really KC because we are more casual about it, but the hardcore ones that have some people that get in game and are in the 30s and 40s already and those that can't log on or only get in for a few that are still trying to get into Copperbell.

Oh trust me, my fellow gamers make me pay as well when I have to login. I hate competition. Always have. But if we are swinging elbows, mine are pretty big.

SE not having auto boot for AFK is a baffling omission. I can only think that they were on such a shoestring budget that they but the bullet in the chamber, spun it and took the risk pulling the trigger going live without it.

Anyone that logs off out of courtesy for other players is probably going to b replaced by another "perma AFK" player that won't.

So it's a Taking Care of #1 situation and there's no one to blame but SE.

Again, when I get home and can't get in, I am going to go make a new character on a JP server. As slutty as I can make her... BECAUSE RAGE!!

And I refuse to stay logged in... even if it means never playing with any of you shmoes in KC ever again, or for the first time.

Sweet baby Jesus, lol. Kind of glad i'm not on the Ultros server now. Although, i can't say it's been a cake-walk to get on to my server. The better-half has had almost no problems what so ever because she and her friends usually play from 11pm til 4 am EST. Damn those night owls.

Oh trust me, when my ISP bounced at 4:30 yesterday afternoon and my actual internet connection was down for 2 minutes, I severely regretted telling everyone to stay logged AFK. Karma bit me, yep. Still two hours of mashing the button and I was back on, and I played the whole time and logged out before maintenance. Now I can't get back on.
#118REDACTED, Posted: Aug 28 2013 at 9:31 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) That's exactly why I do it with two accounts. Sorry (not really), but my play time is more important to me than yours. Hope "y'all" enjoy the queue if you're lucky enough to get in it.

I log off at night around 10pm EST which is 7pm for the PSTers, so I'm giving someone a chance for my spot I'm sure.

However in the morning at 6:30am EST I log in and stay logged in until I get home at night. Who could blame me? Otherwise I won't get to play!

My view is that SE should spend time fixing the server issues which makes an AFK kicker not necessary at all. Why waste time implementing it when there are bigger issues to spend time on??

Meh, I log out, myself. Now I'm not knocking anyone that stays logged in. Myself, I give the spot to someone else, even knowing they'll not give it back. Honestly, I haven't had much trouble getting in. Granted I don't sit and spam the Start button, I simply go do something else for a while and try again later. After a few times, I'm in, play my time, log out, rinse and repeat. They really need to have an inactivity log out. Even 30 minutes seems too long. Anyone gone that long should probably give their computer (or PS3) a breather during that time. I'd say 15 minutes tops. With that in place, it wouldn't matter if you logged out for 20 minutes, you'd more than likely get right back on.

I go ahead and log out when I'm going to be away for more than 15 minutes. Someone else can have my spot for a little bit and if I have to spam the login for a bit so be it.

Inactive auto-logout, even temporarily would help with this.

I'm a little sad that due to not having the capacity FFXIV will be a bit less of a huge success than it would have been.

Sometimes it's best to prepare for the best possible outcome. Otherwise, that outcome is not possible at all.

That can backfire as well. One of the worst things you can do is add twice as many servers as you need and then once the initial rush of players settles down you have a bunch of half empty servers.

I think once they get this all sorted we need a few extra free days playtime and a free server transfer coupon or something.

If you build a flexible/scalable virtual environment then all this could have been avoided with minimal cost/risk.

Their approach tells me they drove this project to the bone on infrastructure that was woefully insufficient.

I completely agree. Some people understand those considerations, although not everyone does. I'm thinking that finding the balance is close to impossible. No doubt they under estimated in this case.

I'm hoping by next week they will have full and healthy servers for everyone. I just hope after the initial frustration fades, players that have given up for the moment are still willing to give the game itself another shot.

The game itself is so awesome you would have to be pretty stubborn to ignore it forever forward.
