I work in IT. They pay me a lot of money to analyze crap and try to understand why sh*t is borked. (Not video games, but real estate systems. Different audience, same problems.)

Seriously. Even the best of us can't foresee every issue.

With 10,000 users on a server, how many PPS is said server sending/receiving? How many PPS of this size can the NIC(s) in the server handle? The NIC drivers/OS kernel? The distribution switch? The network core? And that's just one consideration amongst potentially hundreds of aspects of your infrastructure and systems which can have a drastic impact on performance and stability when its limits are poked.

I'd totally love to hear about the network and hardware and software configurations behind the game. They revealed in one of their posts today that a separate system which seemingly serves all users on the servers in a given data center handles instance entry/exits. That's pretty interesting. I wonder what they use for data storage. I'd really like to see more big mongodb/riak/etc success stories to help hammer home the nails in oracle's coffin. ;)

I'll probably take some packet dumps later and start catalogging some stuff to see what we can figure out.

That's one of the things I love about CCP and EVE Online. They are ALL about metrics, statistics, and details about their server cluster Tranquility. And the publish ALL of it. VERY fascinating read.

So, the Terminator came out around 1984 and, while still reeling from the amazing space epic that was the Star Wars trilogy, this brilliant sci-fi thriller hit me from a completely new direction. Now, it doesn't have to be explained that the titular character was a pretty bad guy. He wouldn't hesitate to destroy anything that got in the way of his task. And to add a bit to his terrifying nature, he was also rather cunning (well, one of these Sarah Connors has to be the right one... ok, let's start from the top).

There is one particular scene, though, that added a little extra to his character, a charming little nuance, if you will. It illustrated that the Terminator wasn't just bad, as unstoppable killing machines go, but was also kind of a ****. It's the part where, as the organic parts of him are rotting, he's in his (paid for) motel room carefully perusing a little address book. The janitor happens to notice the stench as he passes the room and asks if he has a dead cat. The Terminator then decides, through a list of potentially benign replies, to use the most offensive response in his programming, "F*** you, A**hole!"

I mean, he didn't even answer the question!

On another note, I think it should be made clear this is, indeed, a launch. An understandably disappointing one since many of us paid for it. Perhaps not so disappointing for those that haven't experienced the hiccups or are used to it. For me, personally, I'm in the camp that will be giving SE the benefit of the doubt. They certainly have several weeks in the future to either disappoint or possibly amaze me. I dunno. I'm not in a hurry (though I did buy the pre-order heheh).
For the group of vocal naysayers (and not so vocal angry customers), lets be honest here, you couldn't possibly be so angry if you didn't care about the game, I think you're entitled to ask for a refund in the same manner that anyone would want a refund for a product that isn't functioning as it was advertised. It's business and it's fair.

This doesn't have to be so polarizing. I'm rooting for the game! Let's make it fun.

+1 Maybe they'll have a re-re-born 3.0?

I think SE is doing a good job getting us info. You just can't come out with an official announcement, time frame and fix within 10 minutes of a few websites reporting issues.

Also, nearly 1400 people in the GENERAL forums. That's pretty goddamn good.

At the end of the day we are all wanting this game to succeed. Heck, a lot in the industry is coming out of the wood work more or less privately rooting SE on or at least being a bystander for the first re-release of an MMO. A lot of people care about this games success. Hence all the critical feedback.

I guess what I'm saying is, if you hate it so badly, there are other things to do than sit and be a downer among thousands of others.
