Am I going to like this game?Follow

#1 Aug 23 2013 at 8:33 PM Rating: Excellent
I know almost nothing about XIV. So with that in mind...

I played FFXI for a total of 5 years (give or take a few months), 3.5 solid, then I didn't play for about 5years, and then did another 1.5 about a year ago.
In the 5 year gap I played WoW, and have returned to WoW when it's newest xpack came out (almost a year ago). and I made a joke in FFXI, and it back fired on me... I had been working on my BST Axes, managed to get the ones for DMG reduction...joke that I was done with the game. The next day POL would not let me log in..after weeks of trying to work it out, I gave up.

I'm being told by people who, like me have played FFXI and WoW for years, that I should look into XIV. This is me looking into it.

So a few questions for the people who have been playing in beta, version 1, etc.:
-This all "party" play like XI? or can I solo to level?
-Quest just give EXP? Am I going to have to spend weeks/month farming currency, or do quest reward gil (I assume it is called gil in this game as well)?

Basically need to know... is this FFXI all over again, but in "HD"?

Definitely not XI all over again, more like WoW but with Final Fantasy story and over all awesomeness. Give it a try, I think you'll like it.

It's like WoW and RIFT with Final Fantasy graphics.

You can solo to level and in fact most of your leveling will be solo. You mostly just party up for dungeons. Even the story is mostly solo.

Quests give EXP and gil.

Hey now guys, don't rate this down, it's pretty accurate.

You can solo, or you can party, but it's correct. FATEs are group battles that are solo, you can group for Guildleves but again, they can be solo'd.

I'm all for calling Killua out on his BS, but this is pretty close to correct.

I really think you like it. It has some of the best in FFXI that you can do all class jobs or crafting on one toon. Combat reminds me a lot of WoW but only played up to level 10 in open beta. And no worries about people stealing mob as if you and another person tag the same mob you still get exp and loot.

It a sololable As WoW is and there all ready A big world with lot of things to do. So it will take a while before a person runs out of thing and get bored. I recomend you buy the game. Get the standard and if you like the game you can always upgrade to the CE I believe.

Killua mentions leveling being a mostly solo experience, and that's accurate to a point. You can level on your own and most likely getting to cap on your own won't be impossible like it is in FFXI, but you can more easily expedite it through dungeons/instances (they will give you real good XP for the most part), as well as levequests. Leves basically being equivalent to dailies in some ways, though also different (which is why they're actually implementing 'dailies' in a later patch). Leves can be done solo, but if you're smart you'll team up with a friend due to the fact that leves need to regenerate every several hours. In other words, you're better off duoing or possibly trioing them so that you can burn through a bunch of them, and not just your own limited amount.

You can also turn to your Hunting Log for bonus experience. Basically every class has a hunting log, and several pages worth of monsters to track and kill. Kill all the ones on a page, or part of a page, and you'll get a sizable XP bonus comparable to the level that page was made for.

Yeah, it's called gil here as well. The efforts needed to get gil are nowhere near as painful as they were in FFXI, and both typical quests as well as levequests will net you some pocket money for your daily needs. Several quests as well will give you redeemable "medals" which you can vendor for extra gil if you don't like or don't need what the optional quest rewards are, so that's a nice touch.

It's worth getting even if you play it for a week. The in-game world is like a piece of art, and you can spend a few days just exploring and having random fun.

It's not as epic as ffxi was. You will never feel special or better than other players. And the current cap will increase within a year or 2 so any end-game stuff will be mostly worthless. But the game play is fun, and overall it's a great game.

Even tho 14 has had a few bumps, it should not be an epic right out of the box (in a way it should, but meh). FFXI in early days was a harsh game :p

Hopefully it is in stores next Tuesday, because I just so happen to go on vacation for the rest of the month starting on Tuesday. WoW's current xpack is coming to an end, and I'm getting bored with it (it gets a big update next month, but I dunno...). Something new, for a while, is something I'm pretty sure I need :D

took like 2 hours to DL..but I just ran the benchmark. I scored 5701. Says it is very high, I knew it would be...

but through all the CS it showed ... of game play? Has me with a question of curiosity, do fights take forever?
And when I mean a fight, I mean like EXP, or questing around. In one of the CS it showed a small group with many Coeurls attacking. I remember in 11 there was always a bunny that could destroy your hops and dreams, and a "easy prey" fight took forever :o

No, combat doesn't take nearly as long as in FFXI. Depending your class I'd say it's equivalent to WoW's combat time for combat against anything roughly your own level.

pretty much it play like ffxi JUST before Abyssia launched (minus the fact quests give exp)
The quest style is more how ffxi had their quests as they tie in to the story of the area more then WoWs questing did (from my time in wrath and cata) Its not really set up in a quest hub fasion.

Also the story mission net u exp as well.
unsure if u watch anime or Even know of SAO but the character kirito says it best solo can be be done but it can also be inefficiant (aka) solo is do-able but you get exp faster with a party.
in beta 3 i teamed up with a guy with a lvl 21/25 thm/cnj and noticed hat i leveled up faster teamed up with him then running solo (was funner too)

XIV also borrows from GW2 and other leading MMOs. Really it's a "modern" style MMO, set in a FF universe.

The thing I really like about it is that when I play it, I don't feel like I'm playing a "clone", as I did with games like Rift and GW2. It has a unique identity and feel, and this doesn't just stem from graphics as Killua said. My 2 cents anyway.

The more info the better.

I'm glad to see that soloing is a doable thing. I did like the party part of FFXI, it was the getting into them that was, in the end, that drove me away. Spending hours to form a group, to only have it last 20-30min >.>
It was this soloability that made WoW fun for me.
If almost any Class can group up and kill things faster, that is always a plus.

Few more questions:
-There a sub-job system again? Can I stick with one Class/Job/Role (confused a bit on what this is called in this game..), or will I be leveling This, and That, and That for This, to level a "main"?

-Fight is over, some half half health, healers/caster are OoM or low. Time to rest. Is there a rest in 14? If so, is it as slow as FFXI? aka: major down time between each kill.

I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy this game. I play WoW with some RL friends. Friends that I would never have thought they would have played WoW (long story short, one started playing WoW right after H. School [yea I'm oldish], always talked about it. Few gave it a shot, enjoyed it and have been playing for years). I want to suggest this game to them, but all I could (but thanks to you all I can give more accurate info) have done was compare XIV to XI, and there is no way they would last in XI.

I've been trying to read threads, but it seems like 10 pop up in a matter of no time. Is there a 14 Wiki anywhere just packed with info? It may help me :D

Oh and this game wasn't World Wide release? I played FFXI with a Canadian friend, he informs me 14 doesn't come out until next month in Alberta.
So this brings me to last question (atm). Are Servers World Wide, or are the region (NA, JP)? IE: WoW's servers. NA, EU, Asian.

If you liked FFXI and WOW, you should definitely give it a try. It's a shame you didn't get into the beta.

I played FFXI for about 6 years, WOW for a little while but couldn't get into it as much. Love FFXIV and the soloing aspect but do miss some of the close knit community aspects of FFXI. Overall it's a great experience so far.

Your Canadian friend should be able to buy it... tell him to digitally download it?

Hm maybe this is were the next month statement comes in. Is the ps3 version at launch? Unsure if he actually has a PC, or if it is the ps3 version he will be playing on.

I probably did, but was either into w/e I was doing in WoW or just never got around to DLing it until it was closed (my kind of luck, I sign up for all kinds of betas, but never make it in, in most, until the end). It was someone who made it into beta who started this whole "you need to check out XIV" as she played FFXI for about as long as I did.
