FFXIV newbie question. While doing my hunting log quest, sometimes other player would bash on the same mob I was fighting at. Is that an acceptable behavior? Is it going to affect my xp and drop?

It doesn't affect your xp or drop, but it can affect that players xp and drop. It depends on whether or not the other player did enough damage to the mob or not. If you hit a mob first, and that mob dies because you and other players are wailing on it, you get full xp regardless of how much damage you did during its life.

As far as I'm aware it doesn't affect your xp gain, however there is a minimum participation mechanic for each kill. (people have mentioned that it is based on %damage done and the qualifying limit is 10% but I have no idea as to the real numbers and have no evidence to support anything specific other than that there is *some* requirement) Partying changes this mechanic and also provides an XP bonus as far as I'm aware, there have been loose mentions (on reddit) of party based FATE grinding at higher levels as a good method for raw xp gain.

Given there is a minimum participation mechanic for mob kills there is a small amount of bottlenecking at places where mob kills are required for quests or hunting log kills but it hasn't been much of an issue for me. You could always form a party in these places I'm sure. :p

As an aside, someone stole my parking space and someone else barged infront of me at the supermarket today xD so I don't think most people are too concerned with etiquette :p.

So someone can power level me? For example if I'm lvl 5 and start a fight with a lvl 30 mob and then kill by my friend who is lvl 50. In this case I still receive full xp?

While it's not really what SE wanted to see happen, and it is slightly frowned upon, you will NEVER get punished for someone killing your monster in any way even during power leveling. If you hit it first, you get full credit and drops.

If anyone else helped you, regardless of their level, you still get full credit and drops, and if the person did enough to contribute themselves, he/she would get exp and his own set of drops as well.

It's the most fair thing really. I kinda like being able to do hunts just hitting whatever and not fighting over claimed mobs.

It won't affect your experience or drops. If you've claimed the mob (its name is in red), then you'll get full credit for the kill and the drops. If the person helping you out does a certain amount of damage -- it seemed like about 30% of the mob's health -- then they'll also get credit for the kill. Basically, if you've claimed it, it doesn't matter what someone else does.

As far as etiquette goes, it's tough to say. It might annoy some people that like to do things completely solo, but I think the majority of players won't mind. To me, having help or helping someone else just means I can kill things more quickly.

Thanks for everyone advice. Coming from ffxi I tend to avoid stepping into other player fights. So good to know that most players don't mind and no need to fight for the claim.

The last time I was doing some hunting log monsters there were several of us all attacking the same things and getting credit in the log. We weren't partied or anything, but it made it go by fast.

It really helps in hunting logs to 'help out' other players killing the same mobs for their hunting log. Especially if there are more players than mobs. Gets everyone through much faster and no concern with starting up parties - at that level. As long as you do a third of the dmg, you get credit for the kill - but lose out on the loot and full xp(?).

There's a minimum threshold of damage you have to do before you get credit for killing the mob; something like 20%. You'd be hard pressed to do that to something significantly higher level than yourself in any kind of reasonable timeframe to make power leveling like that a thing.

I had the same thing happen in both P3 and P4. I was doing some hunting log kills in the East Shroud. There were not enough vultures for the 3 people(myself included) that were killing them. One player told me to stop killing his mobs, so I explained to him that it didn't hurt his xp, drops or his hunting log with me there. He noticed this and we ended up traveling around killing mobs until we had finished the 1st page.

I'm guessing this will come up a few times in the next few weeks after launch. Don't be afraid to help someone out in a fight, and to let them know that there really is no downside to doing it. One thing to note: this doesn't work if someone is under the effect of Duty. I think you can still cure, but you cannot engage their mob.

Great thread! I was concerned when people were attacking my mobs but I was still getting exp so I didn't mind so much.. Good to know it doesn't have negative effects... On a side note, after grinding about 8 levels on my MRD from 3-10 ish, I noticed I didn't have any Shards or items aside from quest rewards. Was I missing something like Signet from XI?

Nah. The most efficient way to collect shards and a lot of other items seems to be with the gathering classes. I ran into that same problem in P3, but noticed in P4 the DOH class quests gave you a few hundred crystals as rewards. If you have inventory space to hold that many main hand weapons* I'd just unlock a bunch of classes for the crystal rewards.

*not all classes use weapons.

Well they are not weapons per se, but they go in the weapon slot. Add in the fact you cannot NOT have something in that slot, so my frying pan and fishing pole are 'weapons' in a way.
