Cross-Platform Voice Chat Methods. An inquiry...Follow

Hello fellow xiv-ers,

I was just having a discussion with a friend whom I will be playing the game with (+ his gf). We were discussing voice chat and I was curious what you all think is the best cross-platform method. I suggested something via our smart-phones such as skype but, I am not certain that would be tangible in large group scenarios. I know many ppl used teamspeak (I think) back in the day but, I have limited experience since I am a console player and own a mac. I was also thinking it would be nice to have a dedicated chat 'channel' pertaining to your friends and/or ls. Is that plausible?

That being said, what do you think would be the most efficient and logical way to utilize voice chat for playing XIV cross-platform?

Thank you all in advance and I look forward to adventuring in-game with you all.

The group of people I play with always use Vent, of course there is a small charge, but it works very well and allows for different "chat rooms" so that you can specify different rooms for different types of scenarios in case there are multiple dungeons going on or multiple groups doing different events.

Ventrillo or Mumble for large groups work pretty well. They aren't free though.

I'd probably avoid Skype with more than 3 or 4 people.. even that might be pushing it.

Don't mind paying a bit of dough for a viable option. Any of those work using a smart-phone? Thanks for the responses...

I use a wireless headset, so I can use any PC chat program from the comfort of my recliner battle station.

I setup mumble on a Raspberry Pi thanks to Wint's guide:

Now all my friends can connect to my mumble server for free and talk as much as they please!

In our FFXI endgame shell we would use Ventrillo mainly, or Skype if there were a few of us doing BCNMs or something. Skype started falling apart after 8 or more people joined.

IIRC you rent one of their servers for it.

Its personal preference and all, but yes we need to educate WoW players that this is OUR game, these are Characters and not Toons. Time to beat that into them one at a time.

Mumble, and ventrilo, have a free smartphone app. Ventrilo has a app but it is not a first party app and you have to buy it. As for what most people may use, it's more than likely ventrilo. Mumble has lower latency as well. All products you have to pay for a private server. There are some public servers though.

If I can give you any voice chat advise, please use a headset or ear buds. Voice feedback is painful.

Thanks.

I would never not use a headset or buds lol. That would be terrible haha. Thanks all for the sage advice tho. I'm gonna look into it a bit more but I am thinking either Vent or TS.

Too clarify, if one person purchases a 'private server', does that mean that individual can invite whomever he/she likes as long as the invitees have the appropriate software on there phone or laptop. Again, thanks for the positive feedback!

Servers are rented with a particular number of slots. All "private" means is that it requires a password to use. You have as many people logged in and talking to each other at one time as you have slots.
