I think the fairies look fine, at least in the screenshots they do. Since I can't exactly see them in action, it's a little hard to make any kind of judgment on quality of the model. Also, yeah, there's no reason in the world scholar can't have a fairy pet... or a treant pet... or a Bahamut pet. Scholar as a job doesn't exactly have a long and storied tradition with the Final Fantasy canon. And even if it did, jobs get reinvented across FF games all the time.
