Just a question...Follow

I have wondered this for a while and haven't been able to find the answer but I admit I may not have looked in the right places... I understand the Karma system for rating up or down posts but what do the starts under our forum avatars and the titles (scholar and sage for example) above them mean? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I am truly curious.

It's related to your total post count. I'm sure there's a link I can find stand by

Edit... Found it :)
It's about half way down the page.

Thank you, that was one of the things I had thought about but I have seen some people with a similar number of posts but different titles (such as some of our regular sub-default posters) so i didn't know if it was a combo of karma and number of posts or what.

Your title is directly related to the color of your name so default is whatever color that is. Scholar is blue Sage is green Guru is gold-ish and admins are yellow. It is apparently a percentage thing so you can have a very low post count and get a green name if you make mostly good posts. But the more you get rated down the harder it is to dig out of the hole. If you search for the "ask anything" thread by Kaolian he explains it.

Actually that's the only time you CAN get a green or red name.

Well that answers it about the stars but not the titles... atleast the Scholar, Sage and Guru titles that are above the avatars.

Very simplistically..

Your title is an average of your karma across all posts. If your karma is above average across all posts, then after a certain post count (don't remember), you become a scholar and gain the ability to rate posts. If it keeps going up, you become a sage or a guru.

Because the karma is averaged across all posts though, the more posts you have, the harder it is for your title to change. For instance: I have nearly 2000 posts. It's probably impossible for me to become a guru at this point, just because each individually rated post will have only a tiny impact on my average karma, and that impact goes down the more posts I make.

Beyond scholar though, the titles don't really do anything other than pretty your name up a bit.

Here's a direct quote from Kao's post: It's on page 2.

Sure! Unrated is "nuked through the floor" usually requires an admin to achieve this coveted rank. Sub default is below about 2.30. no title is a default 3.00 base karma. Scholar kicks in at 3.01 base karma and goes to about 3.75something. Then you hit sage. sage lasts until you hit guru. Guru is designed to be next to impossible to get, most people should be scholars or sages. What else would you like to know about karma?

Instant sub-default comment incoming: This thread is the perfect example of what is wrong with the karma system on zam. Poster asks a simple question about karma, and gets rated to default for absolutely no reason. Responds to the person giving the correct answer, thanks them, and is courteous throughout, and is defaulted again. Are you kidding me?

Go ahead and lock this thread Wint, since that's your desire with all karma threads.... but some of this stuff is absolute bullsh*t and you know it. Locking threads doesn't solve the problem. Temp banning the asshats who rate down for no reason does.

PS- I rated OP back up because there is absolutely NO reason it should have been rated down other than petty dbags who will literally rate anything down that even mentions karma. Hence OP appearing at decent as opposed to default if you are viewing this after my comment. Smiley: glare

If it's really that bad to the point where someone's karma camping, I know the admins can slap a no-rate on the offenders. But like Pikko said, several years back, it's way beyond the head of any Zam admin to deal with. Edit: OK, she said FFXIV admin...but pretty sure none of them really have much of a say in it.

(And I figure some people may be bored enough to want a trip down memory lane to remember what the inital 1.0 days were like...before they string me up and hang me for bringing the memories back. Smiley: lol

Ha, I was going through some of my old posts from back then the other day. It is amazing at how radically my views have changed from that incarnation to this one.

If I banned everyone who rated down without giving a reason, there wouldn't be anyone left. I watch for patterns in rating behavior whether you want to believe it or not. Man if you guys get this upset over karma here, I wonder if any of you are redditors and how do you deal with that?
