On a feeble effort to change the subject: awesome recommendations in this thread. I've jotted a few of them down to look into some more.
Has anyone played the Golden Sun Series? It started on GBA and has a game on the DS. Its actually really good once you get over the MANY random encounters.
I played the GBA ones, is the DS one any good ?

Yes, I loved the Golden Sun games! I played the first one of the GBA and I was hooked right away. I've been meaning to get back into them, just haven't had the time.

I do know that Mother 3 was translated by Starmen.net guys and it's awesome. I own the GBA game but it's impossible to play without reading.

Mother 3 was pretty good... I wonder how much of me just wanted to like it because it was the new Earthbound?
I just thought it got away from some of the things that made Mother 2 special.
Also, there is a team making Mother 4 lol... again it's a fan game. But it's not some piece of crap thrown together. They've been working on it for about 4 years now, and it's absolutely amazing to see the quality. It's difficult to imagine a group of people with no corporate funding can create something so amazing. If anyone is interested in taking a look let me know and I'll send you a link.
Edit: It's done by some of the people over at starmen.net, the same group that did the Mother 3 translation. Earthbound players are F***ing hardcore.

I have all three versions of Lunar: Silver Star Story and both versions of Lunar: Eternal Blue on my PSP. It's one of the few games I'll regularly replay time and time again. I enjoyed the first three Wild ARMs games immensely, and even the later entries were fun (but not particularly noteworthy). The Disgaea games were always entertaining as well. Final Fantasy 4, 6, and 11 were the only ones I really found myself enjoying. Xenogears was great, if ridiculously convoluted. Chrono Trigger was great as well, though Cross really made me dislike the franchise as a whole. Let's see ... Suikoden 1 through ... 4 I think were good; 5 felt a little too much like 1 through 3 and I found myself not enjoying it as much.

Yes. I have not beat it yet but its a continuation of the first two and it plays out nicely. It also is very well done on the DS. Probably one of the best RPGs, well excluding Crono and FF games, on the DS. Only side notes are, Its really long (40+ hours I hear), and the first few hours is heavy set up and fighting.
For anyone else, if you haven't played them before, play the first, you will know half way through that one if you want to keep playing the rest of the games or not.

You didn't enjoy V, VII or IX? I find most people who like IV and VI also tend to like V and IX at least.
Hmm! I was only aware of the original lunar remake for the PSP, is there also a eternal blue one ?

I can't believe no one has mentioned the Soul Blazer/Illusion of Gaia/Terranigma series. Especially Terranigma, awesome game!
And seriously, no love for Shadow Madness (PS1)? "There will be death".

+1 for Fire Emblem on any and all platforms. I have not played one that I didn't enjoy. However, the 3DS one... I can't take leveling anymore. We are on a break.
This ongoing list is great. I've already added about 8-10 games to my "must play" pile... which is now so large I don't know if I'll ever get through them. I'd need to quit my job for 6 months and slog through them all, then hope they'd take me back...

I have a huge pile of games that I bought with the intention of playing when I'm in my 50-60-70s. Not joking either. Why not? What else will I do? Play bridge?

Vita has some good PSP ports like Crimson Gem Saga and The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, I can't remember if someone was asking about Vita games or not.
I'm not sure how I managed to forget Illusion of Gaia. So many great SNES rpgs
Another series that's worth looking in to (and apparently nobody has thought of yet) is the Arc the Lad series. The first two games feed directly into each other (and Arc 2 is over a hundred hours long).
Secret of Mana is a personal favorite, but I was trying to stay away from major SE releases in my previous posts. I'd also poke Secret of Evermore in there as an oft-underrated gem.

Anyone who enjoys tactical games should also look into the Growlanser series.

Growlanser is an epic series, i really wish they would release the earlier titles stateside, but their latest release was on the PSP: Growlanser wayfarer of Time. Check it out, is a very good entry into the series.
