Those are for consoles, the best ones are in PSP and 3ds tho.

Thanks, those are the ones I tend to see the most frequently. What would you recommend for the PSP/3DS?

For PSP: Star ocean: First departure, Star ocean 2: Second Evolution (Yes they are remakes, with nice added bonuses :P) Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions, Tactics Ogre: Let us cling together (Is a full remake, you might not notice it at first, the USA versions brings a DLC already, where you can get the character you always wanted to get in the original, easily can take a month to fully beat if you play a bit every day.) but as far as new and shinny, Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky! That game is so retro, the combat is solid, the story line is amazing, and the music is really something else. Also try Wild Arms Code AX(Could be wrong is a tactical game) but it is very good. Also try out Final Fantasy IV: Full Collection, it brings FFIV2, which i found to be an excellent addition to the original.

As for the 3DS: First off Infinite Discovery is a must try game, the story alone is worth it, trust me you wont regret trying that game out. Radiant Historia is an RPG, with a chrono trigger feel, very solid also, very good combat, Black sigil is another old school RPG, akin to FF4-6, if you enjoyed those, you will enjoy that one 100%. Suikoden Tactics, is another must try game, very solid, brings more lore into suikoden IV etc etc.

Oh... You said 3ds i listed DS games XD! Well for the 3ds only tales of abyss seems worth your time, if you have not beaten it for PS2...

Clarification:
Infinite Discovery? Not seeing anything on that. Infinite Undiscovery for the 360?

Wild Arms Code AX? Not seeing that either. You mean Wild Arms XF? I have that one, haven't played it yet.

Thanks for the suggestions!

For 3DS I might submit Etrian Odyssey IV:

It's near the top of my list of games to play. Somehow I've played them all EXCEPT SO2... go figure.

I did, so did another person. Great game, really cool combat system.

Not to hijack the thread, but inevitably when a discussion of the best RPGs comes up, 90% of them are from the early console generations. Very few from the PS2 era and later. I'd like some recommendations on RPGs for THIS generation's consoles. It's not that I don't know which games are available, but I don't know if any are really GOOD. It seems like most RPGs are released for handhelds anymore.

Blue Dragon was a surprisingly good game for the 360. Most others have been mentioned. Brave Story for PSP was another pleasant surprise. Eternal Sonata was good too. I personally like Infinite Undiscovery, especially the group battles. Those were so much fun. Shadow Hearts and Shadow Hearts: Covenant are both tremendous games. Another fantastic and unique battle system, it's like it's own mini-game. Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2 both have some very solid elements, though I'd say you can probably skip the first in favor of the second, since it's considerably better. Randomized dungeons FTW.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Fable series. They might not be for everyone, but it's cool to see how your choices effect everything. Plus, getting drunk and having sex was always hilarious.

On the more recent games,

I suggest Dark souls. This game really surprised me. I always considered that the story of a RPG was the most important thing, however, Dark souls have very little story and I liked it very very much. The story was replaced by a deep lore in the game and a beautiful "ambiance" that supported the whole game. Plus it's a very challenging game so I was sold.

Someone finally listed Legend of Dragoon and Lost Odyssey. Secret of Mana, mmm, warm fuzzies.

I haven't seen anyone list Chrono Cross yet.

How about Diablo, the original on PC or Playstation? Not a JRPG but a shining moment for RPG evolution.

Someone listed Shadowrun from SNES, good call.

How about the Wizadry series? My favorite was Wizardy: The Knight of Diamonds. This was NES gold back in the day.

Does PSO count? At its release that game was an innovative masterpiece.

And I would say Bethesda should get a mention. Been playing The Elder Scrolls since Daggerfall. They have never made a game quite as infinitely big as Daggerfall. I've never spent as much furnishing and living in an RPG house as I did in Morrowind.

And Dragon Age! The first one (not the second one.) I got one word for you, Cone of Cold.

Baldur's Gate II:Shaodws of Amn. Who can forget Minsc and his hamster Boo?! Great characters.

Thunderscape. I doubt anyone is familiar with this title. Kind of like King's Field but with a party!

Oh yeah, King's Field. What a great series! (Too bad it evolved into the PS3 exclusive **** Souls series.)

I always think these games would be awesome to replay. But then when I try I am really disillusioned. Better to just have a vague memory of the awesome moment in your RPG past, then try to re-create it and be dissapointed. (I liked THAT?!)

*Sigh* You can't go back. Better keep going forward.

I disagree. It wasn't one of the best rpg's, but it has some very cool elements in it, such as the group battles where you are just massacring huge hoardes of baddies at a time. If the whole game had been more like that it would have been stellar. The crafting system was quite nice too.

Thought of a few more translated games that if you still do any old school gaming you should check out:

Mother (Earthbound Zero) NES - If you are interested in this one and can hold out... a team is remaking the game using the Mother 2 (Earthbound) engine, and it is nearing completion... They're so talented that they're even remaking the music to match the quality of the SNES.

Dragon Quest VI

Tales of Phantasia

Star Ocean

All of these will need to be translated I believe - patches exist for all them.

Ahh thanks for that info. Mother (EB0) wasn't. I was speaking to those interested in emulation.

Edit: Was Mother translated into english? I seem to now remember they may have released it, but I can't remember.
