I remember all the racism in FFXI, and how hilarious it was. When I read that race would now make a statistical difference, I'll admit that I was pleased. Knowing that your race will give you even a slight edge, adds something to the immersion factor, in my opinion. I'm hoping there is also a sense of nationalism as well. As a lolHume from Bastok, having to do a ridiculous quest in FFXI to enter the catacombs under Windurst made sense.

I do hope that I dont get the short end of the stick as far as animations go however. Hume Ranger...looking like a fool with your pants on the ground..I still feel the shame.

But I made a Manthra and really like how Zidane-esque their mannerisms are.

Also, here is something weird that I am pumped for: It seems that they are finally going to utilize the racial backgrounds and differences. And I'm not talking stats either. For example (Warning, weird tangent.)

Those who played FFXI know about the Elvaan superiority complex. When 1.0 was first teased, they showed the races and their descriptions. I was happy to see that the Elezen were of a similar mindset. The hyur expanded, conquered over the Elezen and forced them into the forests and caves, so in the lore of the Elezen, the cave-dwellers hate and despise the Hyur and other "lesser" races, while the Wildwoods started to mingle.

None of this was ever present in the games release. So imagine my delight when I went through the Archer's guild storyline, only to be discriminated against my their Duskwight Elezen guildmate for my inferiority, and hear all his disgruntled ramblings.

TL;DR: They are actually using the lore they gave the races.

The Lancer's quest-line hints on this as well, as it's a duskweight that seems to press down upon all the others in the Lancer's Guild and call them inferior. So far I've really liked the class quest lines.

For years, even after I'd changed my allegiance to San d'Oria, the guard in front of the mog house in Sandy would yell at me any time I changed my Rent a Room back there, "Now move along, foreigner!"

Although I don't mind that they discarded the formal rent a room system (now you can just zone straight into any mog house without changing your location there), I kind of miss getting yelled at by that guard every time.

Let's see if we can list all the racial relationships in XI:

Humes enslaved Galka and think they're stupid animals
Galka hate humes because they enslaved them and Humes are lazy and take credit for Galka deeds

Tarutaru hate Elvaan because they tried to invade their lands centuries ago. Also, because Elvaan use Taru for football practice.
Elvaan hate Tarutaru because they also tried to invade their lands.
Actually, the Elvaan dislike almost everyone outside of their own tribe,

Mithra distrust everyone to some extent, even the Tarutaru, with whom they are on friendly terms otherwise.
(Then again, the Mithra don't trust each other that much either, and regularly assassinate each other.)

Humes and Elvaan kind of sort of get along with each other, and can even produce viable offspring together, unlike other racial combinations.
Galka and Tarutaru kind of sort of get along with each other. Tarutaru don't treat the Galka like stupid beasts, and the Galka admire the Taru's genuine intelligence and curiosity.

Oh, I wanted to mention that some time ago Kachi expressed concern regarding some copy-paste stars. Those have been replaced (they were temp) and now the star map is rich, beautiful, varied, and the stars twinkle :D

That wasn't me. I couldn't give a **** about minor cosmetic elements like that. If the gameplay is solid, I don't care if there's a single star in the entire night sky.

This, however, kind of sucks to hear, because I really liked the streaks in my Elezen's hair. When I stumbled upon my eventual hairstyle of choice, it was really cool and made my character stand out from the crowd. Sounds like I probably won't be able to recreate it ;/

That wasn't me. I couldn't give a sh*t about minor cosmetic elements like that. If the gameplay is solid, I don't care if there's a single star in the entire night sky.

Well the Wildwood can still have reddish hair, but they can't go Golden anymore. It's more in-line with the Duskwight, which could only have dark or dull colors. Still, some adjustments will be necessary. Additionally, they did say that not all element of character creation were implemented, so it's wait-and-see.

I'm just planning to completely stay away from the mithra mullet. After that, cannot wait to play with the generator.

I just assumed the more options coming in phase 3 were the locked hairstyles.

If the Female Highlanders get any long-ish hair styles with the release, I may consider making one to role play as the protagonist in my novel. If not, I may just stick to my original plan of a Male Miqo'te. I know the deal about animating long hair, so I won't get my hopes up.

Edit: Oh, wait. According to the screenshot on the official site of the blonde female that looks like Jessica Simpson, this may be an option.
