We can talk all we want about game mechanics, design gimmicks, etc., but at the end of the day, you have to ask yourself basic questions such as:

1) Is the game enjoyable? (Looks like it will be, from all the videos I've seen)

You could have stopped there. This is the only question that matters, and game mechanics and design aim specifically to answer this question. I don't think there's any kind of dodgy logic or lack of perspective in talking about the game mechanics and design. To me, the answer to this question is, "No, it does not look enjoyable for a game intended to be played for a thousand hours plus." That could either be because they're not showing more, or because there's really nothing more to it. History suggests the latter.

There are going to be plenty of people who would be satisfied with a mediocre/above average Final Fantasy MMO. Enough to make the game successful? Probably not. As always, I hope I'm wrong. I just doubt it.

And this idea that SE will continue to throw good money after bad is probably a PR bluff, but if they did, it would only wreak further financial devastation on SE. So... admirable? I dunno, if you're going to fail, I'd just as soon you accept it and move on.

Why? In what way, from the limited info of Alpha, does ARR look bad/mediocre?

How can you hold such strong opinions of a game that isn't finished or even playable? What makes you have these opinions?

My mind is just boggled by the negativity. I hope it will be great too, but I'm not sitting here thinking it will be great or bad. I don't have enough data points to form ANY solid opinion. All that we have to go on it Yoshi-P's history, the history of 1.0 (with the constant polls to the community for changes, and the quick responses to things we didn't like) and a few short videos from Alpha.

So, given this, the history and Yoshi-P on one side, the Shoddy Alpha videos that didn't even have all the animation frames added yet, those videos weight much more heavily?

If that's the case, I got a super cool screenshot of my new game coming up, want to invest lots of money? I won't give any info, since that's meaningless, or plans, or my track record as a developer, I'll just show you a picture of a Cat who rides a shark around the world fighting crime and eating bacon for 1-ups. (OK, actually, now I want to play this game..)

I think you're misunderstanding me a bit. The game doesn't look good to me, because I'm not seeing things that make me think, "Oh, that looks good." It's not that I'm seeing all these things that make me say, "That looks awful!" (though there are some, like gathering).

It's an absence of excitement; not a revulsion to the game. And that's all that it will take for the game to fail, unfortunately.

So basically, I'm in the same state as you. However, I infer that the game will fail until I see some meaningful evidence that it won't, because that's what happens to most games.

OK, well that makes sense. Trepidation.

Hopefully they start rolling out the hype wagon soon.

Yes Yoshi is a great PR guy, he is very likable. But has he owned any gaming companies? Was he ever been the President? Did he work on the FFXI title, which mind you is the only other FF MMO title to date. So, having that experience would have been a very big plus for me.

Yeah that worked well for Tanaka Smiley: tongue

Pfft, if anything, Tanaka proved in XI that he wasn't fit to manage XIV.

I do hope this game succeeds, like I did the first time. To be honest I'm trying not to get excited for AAR. FFXIV was a big disappointment that left a very sour taste in my mouth, as I'm sure for others. I strongly admire Yoshi-P for the fact he steped up to what many thought was a suicide mission. He has been doing his best (better than many others) to follow his promises, keep the community informed with delays, and most important listens to his fans. As a counter point I find much of the same white knighting and rhetoric used when this game was first released and failing. I get the impression that those who are skeptical are being demonized as they were during V 1.0. (I'm not innocent either, I really tried to defend the game in the early days) Maybe people have short memories, but I haven't forgotten what SE has done. SE will have to prove themselves above and beyond to earn my trust back, as well as many others.
