From LA with Love
February 11, 2013

Hello everyone! Pinurabi here.

As you will have guessed from the title of this post, I'm writing from sunny LA, far away from the ironfisted rule of Fernehalwes.

What's that, you say? Wasn't I supposed to be locked up in a utility closet, under constant guard by tonberry turnkeys? Well, that's precisely what Fernehalwes thought until he discovered, to his woe, that someone had taken his place on the plane to LA. I am so smart! S-M-R-T! Who's King of the Blog now, you pompous ahriman!?

But back to the present! Yoshi-P has embarked on a media tour, accompanied by a band of loyal retainers. Today we sat down with our comrades at Square Enix North America, and ironed out the finer details of the event. Here's a snapshot taken at one of our many meetings:

Screenshot

Next is a photo of (some of) our North American and Japanese Community & Services team members. Such a photogenic bunch! Second from the left, Bayohne looks every bit the door-to-door salesman. Who’s your buddy, eh?

Screenshot

After the first set of meetings had wound down, I went on a self-guided tour of the LA office, and—

Duuude! Check out this radical A Realm Reborn elevator door art! We wants it for Square Enix headquarterses in Japanses!

Screenshot

But alas, I must away—'tis time for yet another meeting! On the morrow we are off to San Francisco, our first leg on the media tour. We'll do our best to keep everyone posted on late-breaking developments via both the forums and the blog, so stay tuned!

Pinurabi

Love these posts, but O.M.G. I'm getting anxious for the beta at this point! I'd love it to start in time for valentines day and score some heart-shaped-bubble-chocolate ;)

I totally agree. I am getting so anxious that I have been reloading the Lodestone and these forums all day at work, just in hopes of getting some sort of update! Then again patience has never been my strong suit when it comes to waiting for games. :P

Bayohne looks exactly like I pictured him. Rukkirii is a flower among Malboros, however. Smiley: laugh

I'm embarrassed to be part of a community that goes so goggle-eyed when a girl enters the picture all they can say about the situation is a variation of "Ooo, pretty lady." To be a female in the gaming industry would make every day a facepalm day.

I'm more embarrassed that they're doing so with such poor resolution pictures! I mean, aside from having a nice figure, we can't really even tell how attractive she is! Ill-informed drooling is the worst kind.

But she does earn a lot of points for the silver hair, leather jacket, and holster. I'm pretty sure there's some common but lesser known geek fantasy to be with a girl who is perpetually in no less than 25% cosplay.

It never hurts to compliment a girl who put in the effort to look good among the wrinkled shirts, jean jackets, and hoodies. Smiley: wink

I think she deserves respect for bringing the fanny pack back and making it look awesome Smiley: thumbsup

And yes, the reaction to this photo is creeping me out, even more so on the official forums. It's like people have never seen a woman before.

And I'm embarrassed for my society that a moment of honest adoration of a genuinely beautiful woman becomes a matter of a sexism debate. It's petty and pathetic.

Sorry Kane, but sex exists. You can't ignore gender or the fact that it's found as attractive off the map. I went 'googly eyed' because for once there is an individual that is attractive and does not sell it like a cheep corner *****. She actually feels like one of the guys yet still pretty. She's cute, trendy, seems confident and knows how to bear herself without exploiting herself. There is a genuine quality about the way she looks. I'd be turned off if she was walking around low-cut in a push-up bra leaning down to make sure the camera gets her 'good side'.

It's not the fact that she's a woman in a crowd of flesh-hungry savages (aka men). It's that someone who've I already thought was cool from the FFXIV official forums turning out to be shockingly beautiful. It's well within my rights and bounds as a human being to idolize someone of pseudo celebrity status for their appeal. The female gender is just as guilty of that as is mine-if not as out-spoken.

She's hot. (Yes, I'm partially being facetious)

That being said, we're all stereotypically trolls that live in our parent's basement, so either our opinions don't matter or it's just expected of us.

However I'm not a fan (in general...I'm overgeneralizing but) of (actually dating) cosplay girls. I once knew an Aerith and well...lets just say it didn't end well. I guess it didn't even start well...anyway... I was 19 and single.

I ended up seeing her a couple of years later on TechTV when they covered a ComicCon, ugh, I'm old.

It's not just you. Frankly most males in the world in general make me feel embarrassed.

I don't know how much more one can "sell it" than this.

I really thought I was alone in being embarrassed. I tip my hat in the general direction of you people.

I'll take it a step further and prepare for karma down when i say I personally don't find her particularly attractive, but to each his own.

You would be surprised how many objectively average-looking females manage to improve the impression they make (and their confidence) by seeking out occupational branches which are typically dominated by males. Even a wallflower looks like a rose among thistles.

Mod +1: Insightful

(You'd be amazed at the flak I get for mentioning I'm female on Slashdot.)

Many girls want to walk the fine line between being ogled, and a "Yeah, it's fine," reaction to their looks (and it's not very different for men, though most of us don't have to worry about being ogled). Attractive females seem like mythical creatures until you actually spend prolonged time around some of them (which leads to the ogling), and then, given the opportunity, you realize they're just attractive people who are probably kind of ****** up. Meaning most men are not on the fine line, and don't have the life experiences to stay there. Just try to appreciate the fact that some of those guys aren't jaded yet, and still believe that a beautiful woman will some day ride in on her unicorn and bring happiness to their desperate lives. Once they learn otherwise, it's not likely to be because they developed an innocent and healthy appreciation for female beauty.

And guys, please make a liar of me.

To paraphrase Pratchett, a man must learn to adjust his standards of beauty to the reality of his station in life. (This was regarding the reaction that the court jester Verence in Wyrd Sisters had upon seeing the witch Magrat, who was young and somewhat pretty by loose definitions of the word, but no great beauty.)

Eh. My husband thinks I'm cute, despite my Rubenesque figure and Hanoverian nose. Smiley: blush

Dont care about Rukkirii. I was more impressed by the elevator door art. If I had an elevator in my house I would want it to look like that.

I donno. I seemed to be be fortunate in the regards of often encountering beautiful women. But that does not put me beyond the capacity of dropping my jaw at a pleasant surprise once in a while.

How someone looks and how someone acts is part of a whole picture of beauty, and both are subject to the eye of the beholder.

But to pull this back into a gaming discussion, downing on women who are closer to the social idea is like insulting Call of Duty for being a successful franchise, yet even I catch myself doing it from time to time. It may not suit your tastes but you cannot deny the presence. We're stuck doing that with WoW all the time when we talk about MMOs.

I think we're all just a bit too ready to press the alarm button when it comes to gender. At least for those in the US of A. It always seemed paradoxical (and horrifying) to me that a social culture, buy in large can be so comfortable with violence yet so awkward around sexuality. You'd think we'd be more afraid of death than life.

I find it stupid to be focusing on the appearance of her in a screenshot versus game related stuff.
I find it stupid to be arguing about whether she is hot or not.

There is too much everything is taboo going on in this USA. Pretending or trying to conceal things we want doesn't make that want go away. If anything, repressing our desires creates the sexual dysfunction, sickos and destructive people. I feel it is far more respectful and rewarding for a woman to hear your sincere compliment upfront with you not expecting anything. Rather than be around you and not know what your intentions are when you mask them, like you're trying to get something from her. Just use a little tact/courtesy in your sincerity, women are still human beings and not objects.

Looks are only the surface anyways. It's the inside where the real miracles take shape. If you have a pretty house that's cool but inside the house is what matters. Pretty car? Is it dependable, economical, comfortable, spacious, thrilling, energy/money hog?
Pretty woman visually? Does she have high self esteem, comfortable with her sexuality, passionate, honest, etc, etc, etc.
Or low self esteem, depressed, insincere, negative, etc, etc, etc.

To be fair, there's little to be had in that blog post as far as game related stuff.

"Oh look at us, we're getting ready for a media tour, here's some buddy buddy shots!" And wild speculation on what we see is moot in ten days. At this point, people are just looking for distractions. The Official Boards even started off a 'Post yourself in rl' thread. It's pretty much just killing time.

As far as the censorship/taboo/fearloving nature going on in the 'land of the free and home of the brave' I've always found it both amusing an disturbing, even as a resident.
