Eh, how many games got rave reviews on release only to realize a few months down the road that it wasn't all it's cracked up to be. Even Chrono Cross had massive praise on release, but some re-reviews brought it down quite a bit. Overall though, arguing for this stuff does get ridiculous, you enjoyed the game, great! you didn't? great! Even XIII got some pretty good initial reviews but it felt as though most players didn't enjoy their play through.

I think a lot of people had bias against Chrono Cross due to expecting the gameplay to be like Chrono Trigger's. Chrono Cross was an amazing game on its own though, awesome soundtrack, good characters and a fun combat system. It also had replay value that was possibly even greater than Chrono Trigger's.

We liked Legend of Legaia so much that my brother named his FFXI character Gala back in 2004. :P

Also, I accept your Legaia plug and raise you a Wild Arms.

Personally I couldn't get into it. Perhaps it was another case of a lack of anticipated nostalgia, but I found the combat to be very so-so, and all the undeveloped characters were more of a burden then a boon to me.

That game is so underrated is not even funny, the game tells a very interesting story, it has good graphics for it's time, and a very interesting gameplay (At the time.)

Another game that is very underrated is Legend of Legaia!

Try it out guys is an awesome game.

Oh man I LOVED Legend of Legaia as a kid! The Korenglish they used in the Arts animations was awesome, and I liked how your Ra-seru and equipment would change as you leveled up.

I couldn't get into Wild Arms. I tried it a couple times and just couldn't jive with it.

Oftentimes you just have to be in the right mood for a game. I tried Vagrant Story three or four times over a twelve year period, never liking it but always wanting to, before a spark finally seized me and I played obsessively through, loving every moment. It's one of my all-time favourite games.

My point is that you can hear recommendations but you still need to obey your own whims; store the game away somewhere and, sometime -- it could be a month from now, it could be a decade -- you just might find yourself thoroughly enjoying it. d(•_• )

Personally I think Wild Arms 2 was a superior title and essentially a remake of the first. You can play it and skip the first altogether.

Wild Arms is one of those games, that is overshadowed by other releases, Excellent storyline, gameplay, and music, Did you play the remake they made of it for the PS2 ?

And sure i accept your Wild Arms and rise you a Xenogears.! Top that Smiley: lol

Ok this confirms my theory, that you really dont pay attention to the story Smiley: lol

Wild arms and Wild arms 2 are totally 2 different games. Wild arms Alter code F is a remake of Wild arms.

Wild arms 2 has nothing to do with Wild amrs 1. Wild arms 3 and wild arms 1 are tied in the story.

Wild Arms 2 really only has superficial story differences from 1. If you really analyze the two stories, they are nearly identical at their core. I'm just saying that if you play 2, you'll get the experience of 1, plus some.

I loved Chrono Cross, the soundtrack was incredible.

Wild Arms 3 was my favorite, I'm a sucker for cell shading though. Also in that category (underappreciated, and cell shaded) are Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2. I don't think I've ever been so sad as when I finished Dark Cloud 2 (100% everything completed, final weapons, etc). I played the hell out of that game.

I have a big collection of RPG's for the PS2 I've been collecting and waiting to play, includes:

Radiata Stories
Star Ocean : Til the End of Time
Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter
Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Rogue Galaxy (looks a lot like Dark Cloud)

I do have others that are more well known that are further down my list to replay, the Xenosaga series (beat 1, tempted to skip 2 and just play 3), Grandia III, etc.

Superficial ? Man seriously did you even played both games ? There is nothing similar in their story's, the settings and the world is the same, but at their core, and at everything both story's tackle different issues, if you play 2 you played 2, and if you played 1 you played 1, they are not sequels they are stand alone games, it is like saying if you played FFVII you get the same experience as having played FFVI... Which is stupid since both games are set in different universes and are not connected.

So quick question ? Is every final fantasy the same ? since they all have to do with crystals in some shape or form, and have summons and the bad guy always loses ?

That is exactly what i loved about the game, how your Ra-Seru grew as you became more powerful.

To the guy that said he could never get into wild arms, well graphically is a very dated game, but the story and gameplay is very classic RPG like, if you can make it to the festival in adelhide(SP) when the demons start messing with you, the story dramatically picks up after that.

Oh i got another game you guys need to try out: Tales of Destiny.

@ Wint Radiata Stories is a solid RPG, is kinda like Suikoden where you can acquire 50+ characters, and it has 2 story lines, the game is awesome, you should really try it out.

Dragon quarter is a letdown in my opinion, just because of how great the first trilogy of the games where, and how IV even tho a stand alone game, still is better than dragon quarter, is an intersting game, but nothing like previous breath of fires.

Star ocean 3 is another solid title, and shadow hearts is a very dark interesting game, try it out.

I bought them because they were on lists of good RPG's, and I managed to find them, usually for $10 or less, at 2nd hand stores (not gamestop, we have a local shop here that gets good/unique stuff in every once in a while). The major thing holding me back is time Smiley: smile

Maybe I'll put up a poll and let everyone decide which one I play next once I'm done with my XII playthrough.

Favorite non-FF RPG's:

1. Chrono Cross
2. Star Ocean: The Last Hope
3. Radiata Stories
4. Legend of Legaia
5. Xenosaga Series (just lumped them together as a whole)
6. Star Ocean: Till the End of Time
7. Legaia 2
8. Dragon Quest VIII

You guys are killing me, bringing all this stuff up again >_<

EDIT: Honorable mention to Lost Odyssey

Of course I did... and I actually played 2 immediately after the first one. I even just reviewed the story synopses for both games. The plot is nearly identical; the characters are basically transmigrations, which is consistent with my recollection.

I'm starting to suspect that you're not a trustworthy source of thematic analysis.

Hmm... non-FF RPGs huh..

I'd probably go in no particular order:

Xenogears
Suikoden 2
Chrono Trigger
Valkyrie Profile
Legend of Mana / Secret of Mana (yeah, this makes it six... eat me)

I'm going with (also no particular order)

Earthbound
Super Mario RPG
Xenogears
Chronotrigger

Though I have to confess that I've yet to play Suikoden 2 or Terranigma. Feel like I'm forgetting one.

I haven't played Terranigma through, have kind of a hard time getting in to it. Also top 5 lists force me to leave off so many other amazing games.. Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, Secret of Evermore (don't judge me!), Illusion of Gaia... and more recent offerings too like Valkyria Chronicles, or the .hack//G.U. series, or Fable 2...etc...etc..etc...

There have been so many great games that had nothing to do with Final Fantasy, and yet Final Fantasy 6 will consistently make my list of all-time favorites... btw, how in the world has that not had a remake yet? How is that even possible?

SE apparently doesn't like to make money. "Hm, we're hurting financially... no way we can remake titles that will inevitably ship a million plus units!"

Though at this point, I kind of don't trust them to do it. I was never really that happy with the sprite-style remakes they did. It was fine for 1-3 (for some reason), but I felt like it didn't do justice to IV. I feel doubly so about VI. However, I would love to see them apply the same dedication to bringing world's to life as they did in Crisis Core.

*Actually, I'm kind of convinced that they just know how much more money they'll make by re-releasing partially improved games, like is commonly done with DVD movies.

They'll have one for the next handheld, then they'll release again with slightly better graphics, and then they'll have a version with a bit of bonus content... just enough years between them so that you feel like you haven't played it forever and have to buy this newest latest version.
