Do you run dungeons just for fun?Follow

#1 Nov 25 2013 at 5:23 PM Rating: Good
On a certain other forum that shall not be mentioned (Scum and Villainy) there was recently a discussion on how high level players tend to behave as though the content they've already cleared once no longer exists. This was met with a response from one player of, essentially, "lol how many times a week do you run Sastasha, n00b?"

And I realized my answer would have been "a couple."

I like FFXIV's dungeons. I like almost all of them, in fact, with the exceptions of Toto-Rak (too many blind corners) and Aurum Vale (Pet user? /darthvadernoooooo.jpg). On my SMN and SCH, and especially my WAR I like to go back and whoop the hell out of the lower level dungeons during my offtime between LS activities. Brayflox is especially my favorite victim for my WAR.

I don't really get anything out of them but a paltry little bit of EXP, true. And a few tomes from Stone Vigil, CM, Prae, and Darkhold. But.... the dungeons themselves are fun. The bosses are fun to fight. Few things make me as happy as dragging Aiatar around the boss arena by his nose like a *****, smacking him in the face with Tomahawks as I'm running away to reposition him, and Brutal Swinging him in the nose when he tries to breathe on me.

Do people not do dungeons for fun? I'm an old-hat PSO player. I ran the same 4 dungeons back to back for years and enjoyed it. Is that not a thing in XIV?

The dungeons are fun, true, but since I don't feel like leveling up another job to 50, there's really no reason for me to do the lower level content again.

Not until the patch, anyway.

Heck, when melee jobs get a tweak, I might do 30 MNK to 50 exclusively through dungeons.

I am a level 50WAR and do end game and I do.

I am a Tank. People need my job. The worst thing is when you get to a final boss and someone rage quits or someone decides that the group isn't cutting it. That's not fair in my opinion and should be punished. Anyway, I join dungeons that are already in progress to cover for the *** clowns.

So, I do. Plus, I like some of the boss fights. Its also nice to meet new people and see if there is anything new that i can pick up.

I have multiple reasons for running low level dungeons.

I want multiple copies of sets for my characters, for collection, for roleplaying for art references. I have friends that need to get runs done. Three, going through dungeons at low level also can be done in low level gear that can be spiritbound for materia.

And soon I'll want to do them in roulette for currency anyways. So... yeah. Many reasons to do them. It seems to feel that certain community groups believe their views are the only ones that exist or should exist and all others are beneath their intelligence or enjoyment level.

Im just going to speak based on my opinion and how i feel about it.

Yeah, i wouldnt mind running those lower level dungeons again, but as it stands there isnt an incentive to at all. Sure some people do it because they want to. But other people (and i think the majority of people think this way) sees the oportunity cost of running a lowbie dungeon again and just doesnt want to make that sacrifice. The opportunity cost being time lost to gather myth/philo in echange for having some fun.

For myself if i decide to do this, im losing progress i could have made by running AK or WP. In the future patch, not only will i be able to continue to progress my character but ill be able to play the lower dungeons, help out some people going through it, keep progressing and having fun. You might ask why i need an incentive to do these things, why cant i just do it? The answer is because im always looking forward. In an MMO you have to if you want to do end game activities such as coil. It requires the kind of dedication you need to complete such an obstacle. In my mind if im not progressing, im not bettering myself.

In any case this patch is going to be awesome and will address a lot of issues, including this one. 3 weeks away!

You my friend are going to be a pro at the Duty Roulette feature coming up in the 2.1 patch next month (which places you in a random low level dungeon so you can earn tomes), and all those people who laughed will be the real n00bs. Smiley: nod

I love doing dungeons. Heck, I run the training guildleves all the time just for fun. There's something about showing newer players the ropes when you're a tank, or helping a dd deal damage. Plus there's the off chance of an xp boost, however small it becomes later down the road. They're almost always beautiful environments, it can get crazy sometimes if someone AFKs for an extended period of time, and overall very interesting :D

Hm is the question, "Do you enjoy doing low level dungeons on your level capped characters?" or "Do you enjoy running dungeons, period."

My answer to the first question is no. I love leveling in dungeons but once my characters are at cap, I do not enjoy going back to these dungeons only to find that half of my abilities do not work due to the level cap (hi CoP). Once the dungeon exp is increased, I will level my remaining classes exclusively in dungeons. It has always been my favorite way to level.

My answer to the first question is yes. I love running dungeons at level cap (especially in DF) because each run is a different experience. You never know who you will be paired with and what gear they will have (or won't have). It's exciting having some random nature in my dungeon runs.

Short answer: Nope.

Long answer: Dungeons just don't tickle me like they do some others. You wade through a bunch of unrewarding trash as fast as possible just to get to a boss and kill it ASAP that usually isn't very difficult even for first-timers. It spits out some loot that tends to invalidate crafting for its given range and then you're off to the next trash and boss cycle. Waiting in queues also add to this discontent, especially if you'd waited 30+ minutes just to get a total fail group or at least one overly demanding jerkass. And now you basically multiply this by however many times it takes to max out, either on specific gear or the weekly currency. And overall, this gets worse the more bodies you add to the mix (transition from dungeons to raiding) and the reasons why people may dislike them certainly aren't limited to them just being terrible players themselves, as is commonly inferred.

So, you could also say I don't favor the preferential treatment dungeon running has received in MMOs over the years and only do the bare minimum possible to get it out of the way (story quests) or at least have SOMETHING to do because some snobs fear open world content could be rewarding in its own ways. I simply can't admire potential artistic aspects when I'm not on my own because of the earlier mentioned rush mentality. I also tend to find it a shame that a vast majority tend to NOT see dungeon/raiding content, either by preference or bad luck and tiered requirements in the system. So there's also an element of potentially wasted dev resources at play just pandering to a vocal minority.

Depends, but mostly not.

I like the Stone Vigil for some reason. And i suppose the layout and design of most of them are interesting and i like them. But actually running those dungeons is a completely diffirent story.

I dont -mind- some of them, but i certainly dont like them. Not the dungeon's fault (except for now CM, wth?), it's the completely toxic endgame that's to blame. Dont ever want to set foot in a WP again. AK i can kinda endure. Aurum Vale is just hell.

No, i dont run dungeons for fun. I run them for points. I havent done a single run for Myth tomes in over a month, that's how bad it gets.

I'm a tank. I try to do some "good samaritan" runs every week. Queue up for Satasha, Copperbell, Tam-Tara, Toto-rak and Haukke manor at least once a week. Hop into an Ifrit HM or Garuda HM 2-3 times a week. That kinda thing. It's nice to help the community, the fights are fun to do every now and then, and I get a trip out of people examining me and freaking out. I've had people ask me what a relic+1 warrior with my gear is doing running lowbie ****. Cracks me up.

One Garuda HM had a guy examine me and say "Quor, why are you here? You could puke on her and she'd die." I had a hearty chuckle at that. Another Garuda HM apparently went so swimmingly that both the SMN and the BLM wondered if they had nerfed Garuda. I told them they just had a competent tank who knew the fight insanely well and overgeared it by a large margin, but thanks for the compliment.

Kind of a side note to OP. We apparently will see an increase in xp gained when doing dungeon runs. This, supposedly, will entice ppl to defer from using FATEs as the main method to level.

In my opinion, this should be considered great news, specifically for the console player. That being said, If you have appropriate settings reduced via HUD, as well as port forwarding, direct line into console, and installed a SSD, FATE grinding is totally playable. I would rather have this tho... <Static> <Dungeon> <Party> <Can I have it?>

Concluding, I totally agree that I love running dungeons. I was chatting with my FC about creating 'Dungeon Static Nights' to aid in levelling alt jobs. Perhaps you could even create little mini-games based on speed/loot acquired / etc. Definitely more fun.

PS. Its 6am and I ramble when I don't sleep. Happy Hunting!

I do love running dungeons. I really do. I love the feeling i get when a group really clicks. Escpecially if it's an FC group. My issue right now is time. It's very difficult for me to dedicate a block of time and guarantee very few or zero interruptions. With the Roulette thingy coming up, I might try queueing more, but I imagine I'll probably be focusing on daily quests instead. I just don't think it's fair to queue for a dungeon if I even have an inkling I can't dedicate 90 minutes uninterrupted.

Nope when I'm done with it the first time I'm done for good unless I have a reason to go back and do it (like helping a friend, gear I need, tomes, or leveling a second job). But this is how I am with just about all games once I beat the game one I'm usually done with it and move on to the next game.

Dungeons is pretty much all I do besides DoH/DoL stuff.

I am trying to level lower level classes, but FATE has got to be one of the most boring things to do in an MMO I have ever experienced, and I've played a lot of MMO's over the years. Dungeons are fun to do in my opinion so I run them despite the EXP earning not being on par with FATE. But I did so in quest based leveling MMO's also, as repeated questing can get boring too, especially once you've seen them before.

I've got WAR at 50, and as mentioned above, I like to run lower level ones because I like to help out and we are a needed role in the dungeon running community.

I've heard people say SE plans to raise EXP earned in dungeons for 2.1, but I cannot find anything in writing to support that statement.

There's this wonderful tool called Google.

As far as dungeons it depends on the mood. I agree in that I don't like going back simply due to the whole Gladiator/Paladin disconnect around 30 - 39 in which you're better off unequipping the crystal because you lose access to much when crossing that threshold and don't gain anything worthwhile until 40. If they fix that, I'd have zero problems just running random ones when I'm bored (did it enough in other MMOs).

Personally I've been waiting until 2.1 to bother leveling anymore combat classes and have just sunk leves and rested experience into capping my gatherers and slowly working on my crafting classes.

I definitely enjoy it as a tank, especially if I see shouts or fc/ls members needing it. It's a damn shame people are so gear driven and do nothing but something that benefits them. The content is there, it's fun, people just refuse to repeat it for some odd reason.

If anything, it's relaxing. After running Coil, primals for any close-to-finishing relics, and everything else that happens, the ability to random queue will be nice to decompress come 2.1.

Fun? What do you think this is, a game!? I'll run Satasha if my excel sheet says it's profitable! Smiley: bah

I slowly level all classes because it's fun, but I admit I don't run instances when there is little or no xp, unless it's to help someone.

We ran those dungeons for the red boxes =p. And Gun Toting Rangers make all dungeons cooler. Sadly, I have limited time on the game so I must personally make the most of my time, but I do enjoy Brayflox, WP (oddly), and Haukke Manor (without the bots).

I run dungeons with friends when they need a healer. In exchange they run dungeons with me when they need a tank or a healer.

Did Tam Tara the other day with a friend who is still getting the hang of tanking. I went on my baby THM, and another friend went on his baby conjurer. We picked up a fourth DPS who was not a newbie either but on a third or fourth job. We had a fairly fun and relaxing time, and I got a friggin Acolyte's Robe for my baby THM so I'm set for body gear til I stop at 26.

I'm guessing that most players who only have a DPS job aren't going to try and queue up for lowbie dungeons "just for fun" since the seek time is so long. As a BLM, chances are, even if I do get into a group after seeking for an entire hour, I'm probably just blocking out some DPS who actually needs the dungeon.

Maybe when I level a tank job, I'll do more random lowbie dungeons.

I have run them just for fun, mainly the 1st 3 and Brayflox, with a second objective being vanity gear. Acolyte, Foestriker, and the 3 Brayflox sets. Its fun being the vet and helping the noobies. Like anything else though, I'll run a few and then get tired of it because they take a long time and the xp just isn't worth the time commitment until 2.1. Brayflox can take 2 hours between queue time, new people confusion, and DF groups usually wanting to do every side passage and every mob. If I had a FC static that wanted to run dungeons together, I'd be all for it. They really are well done in ARR.

As a DPS this is pretty much my thoughts on this too.

But that being said, the patch update will probably make dungeon queues much faster, so that may not be an issue anymore (That's the reason for the update as far as I know anyways)

I don't even cap out on mythology.

Personally I am not a big fan of dungeon delving, so, other than helping people or making gil I tend to avoid dungeons.

There are still a few I still need to check out, but I just can't get motivated enough...
