At least it's only 2 hours again.

Didn't they say they would be doing these 2-hour maintenances every Friday and Monday?

I hope not. A lot of people like to take Fridays & Mondays off to have a long weekend and get some game time in. (Speaking for myself here)

Not that this ever seemed to matter for SE when they did XI maintenance. >.<

2 hours doesn't exactly consume the entire day.

I tend to play into those hours (PST here).

Same here if I happen to have that Monday off I'll play Sunday into Monday morning (often on holiday weekends) so, yeah some of us plan on having that time.

As for the "2-hour maintenance" many of us have seen these maintenance windows expand or be followed up by "emergency maintenance" just hours later. So a midnight to 2AM Monday (or Friday) maintenance can turn into a day long affair.

Point being, I hope scheduled maintenance occur mid-week or on Tuesdays as is the case this week. I don't see the point in SE doing construction on Fridays & Mondays when players are more likely to want to be on.

Doesn't matter what time they do it, they'll annoy someone. If you work 9-5, if you're a shift worker, if you're a student, your play times will all vary. For me weekends aren't play time, so the mid week maintenance reduces my play time, but for 2 hours? Who cares, there's other things to do.

I tend to play those hours too (Alaska time, one hour behind PST). So for me, the maintenance actually started yesterday.

I work nights, so I'm on NST(Night Standard Time) so I'm hit with every maintenance in the day.

I guess you have to read the post to understand their reasoning.

Basically they are resetting the memory just before and after peak times to prevent corrupted memory from causing lag. It's a preventative maintenance.

Here is the Yoshida's post included in his Server Upgrade Letter - Part 3

Quote:
As instance servers rapidly create and clear content, it's easy for memory to be depleted. Due to this, we've decided to adopt a "rolling restart" method during afternoons when the amount of players is low to avoid periodic long maintenance, and we will be performing maintenance on instance servers one by one. The biggest benefit of this method is that overall operation will not be affected because we will be performing maintenance sequentially. However, it’s difficult to use "rolling restarts" during times when there are a lot of people, and as there are a lot of people playing during weekend afternoons, this will be limited to weekdays.

As explained above, the usage rate of instance servers is extremely high and is especially heightened during weekend peak time, and we've determined that weekday rolling restarts alone would be difficult to maintain memory conditions, so we've decided to implement the following plan for the Japan data center.

Short maintenance for roughly 2 hours every Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m.
Short maintenance for roughly 2 hours every Sunday from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m.

The hours between 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. (JST) has the lowest number of players and the effects of maintenance are lowest during this time frame. With the short maintenance occurring on Friday and Sunday mornings, it will reduce the need to have emergency maintenance like last night, and increase the stability and comfort of playing during weekend nights. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

We will be doing our best to complete the maintenance in as short of a time as possible, and we will be sure to keep you up to date.

Moving forward, the development and operations teams will be doing their best to provide comfortable play conditions, and as always, we appreciate your continued support.

So basically they're doing graceful shutdowns of the systems, letting them breathe for a minute, then a normal reboot.
