Right so i bought FFxi from the steam other day, everything was going great the i got to the playonline viewer error - Playonline Viewer installation cannot write to specified destination folder. Please check your access privilege- Now i looked at a lot of other places and there was really no help, i sent an email to support but who knows when thats going to be answered. If anyone has a fix for this error i would be happy, thanks

I had a problem similar to this earlier - I forgot that I had FFXI installed via Steam, and accidentally downloaded the Windows 7 playonline viewer. I'm sure it has something to do with the Windows 7 playonline conflicting with your Steam playonline viewer, or something like along those lines.
What worked for me was to make sure the downloaded playonline viewer is uninstalled first THEN uninstall and reinstall from Steam. Even fixed some password/ID problems I was having earlier.
Probably not the most elegant of solutions, but hopefully that helps.

Make sure your anti virus is not interfering with any access rights, might try temp disable during installation.

Long odds, but are you installed on a domain? Are you logged into the system as an administrator?

I run enterprise so Im not the admin but when I run as admin I have the same problem
What directory do you have Steam and FFXI installed in?
We've run into this sort of issue because user accounts have a limit of 2 gigabytes through active directory, and any user account who tries to step over that 2 gig limit gets this error message. User who was at 1.99 gigs simply could not save a 150K Word file to her My Documents, because of the limits of the server. We fixed it for her by changing the group policy to 3 gigs and warning her she needed to clean out some old stuff.
I doubt it applies to your situation in the same way, but it's something to look at, at least.

I have had this problem on other games. Sometimes for some obscure reason the directory the game needs to write to gets marked read-only. I am usually able to go into folder properties and remove the block.

I had the same issue today, I have the ultimate edition i bought from steam and I'm using windows 7. catwho's post asking where steam and ffxi were installed got me thinking. To play the game, i had to go through the steam directory and find that version of the polviewer. C: > Programfiles(x86) > Steam > steamapps > common > ffxi > SquareEnix > PlayOnlineViewer > pol.exe , you should be able to boot the game from there, for anyone having this problem who purchased it through steam. Hope this helps :)

My suggestion is just to skip Steam cluttering up the process and install from SE's official files: here
Just be advised the update process will probably take a minimum of 5 hours once you get all the registration stuff handled.

Usually takes me almost 20 hours to fully download and update. I've just stopped uninstalling when I take a break from the game.
